Vitinha's Cross Finds Mendes, but Stanek Denies the Winner
In a thrilling encounter, Portugal and the Czech Republic played out a 1-1 draw in their Euro 2024 Group Stage match. The hosts came close to snatching a late victory when Vitinha crossed from the right and Mendes headed back across goal, but Czech goalkeeper Stanek made a superb save to preserve the draw.
The match was evenly contested throughout, with both teams having chances to win. Portugal started the brighter of the two sides and had the first real opportunity of the game when Joao Felix struck a shot just wide.
The Czech Republic grew into the game as the first half progressed and had a great chance to take the lead when Tomas Soucek headed over from close range. The visitors continued to press after the break and eventually found their reward when Patrik Schick scored a stunning goal from 25 yards out.
Portugal responded well to going behind and piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser. They were rewarded for their efforts when Vitinha's cross found Mendes, who headed home from close range.
The draw leaves both teams with a point after their opening Group Stage matches. Portugal will face Spain in their next match, while the Czech Republic will take on Hungary.
