Meet Phrigi, the Mascot of the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games
Mascots Through the Years
Since 1968, each Paralympic Games has featured a mascot, typically an animal native to the host region or a human figure representing the cultural heritage of the host country.
The Olympic Phryge, a stylized red Phrygian cap, was the official mascot of the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. The Paralympic Phryge, a blue Phrygian cap, was the official mascot of the 1992 Winter Paralympics in Tignes, France.
The mascots of the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo were Miraitowa and Someity, respectively. Miraitowa is a futuristic blue and white robot, while Someity is a pink and white flower fairy based on the Someiyoshino cherry blossom.
Introducing Phrigi
With just over 600 days to go until the opening of the next Olympic and Paralympic Games, the official mascots of Paris 2024 have been revealed.
The Paris 2024 mascots are called the Phryges, based on the traditional Phrygian hats that serve as a symbol of freedom and the French Revolution.
The Phryges are two red and blue characters, one representing the Olympic Games and the other representing the Paralympic Games. They have long, flowing manes and tails, and they wear sneakers with the colors of the French flag.
Phrygi's Symbolism
The Phrygian hat has been a symbol of freedom since the French Revolution, when it was worn by revolutionaries fighting for liberty, equality, and fraternity.
The Phryges' red and blue colors represent the colors of the French flag, and their sneakers symbolize their athleticism and the spirit of competition.
